MTB route: Guadix -Yegen- Laujar de Andarax, Bentarique and San José - Cabo de Gata circular route
Mountain biking holiday route: A journey into history crossing the landscapes of south-eastern Andalusia. From high mountain terrain right down to the coast, amidst the picturesque once-Moorish villages of the “unconquerable” Alpujarra and the pristine beaches of Europe’s only desert oasis.
This journey is born in the fusion of culture and nature (Sierra Nevada and Cabo de Gata Nature Reserves). You will ride under the unique light of the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Mediterranean Sea; you will sample a delicious, varied local cuisine; you will ride along the ancient trails of the Alpujarra, watch as flocks of flamingos take flight from the Cabo de Gata salt flats… About the route… Setting out from the historic city of Acci (today called Guadix) and passing the magical Calahorra castle on the Marquesdao plain, you will head into Sierra Nevada by the La Ragua pass, dropping down to the village of Yegen, immortalized in the writings of the English traveller, Gerald Brenan. From there you will explore the little-known eastern Alpujarra, to discover the delightful Láujar de Andarax valley (capital of the region in Moorish times), to finish up in the village of Bentarique. From there we take you to the heart of the stunning Cabo de Gata coast, which you will also explore by mountain bike.
