Stunning Roof Terrace Views Moorish Watchtower - Lecrin
Photo3 Photo4
Master Bedroom Valle de Lecrin

A traditional village house in Albunuelas, an undiscovered Moorish village hidden in its own dramatic gorge amid the lush beauty of the Lecrin Valley. Here, where mules and donkeys still wend their way to work each day, is a region of glossy-leaved orange groves, set against the dramatic snowclad backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Situated in the oldest part of the village, on the edge of the orange groves, Casa de la Puerta Grande has been comfortably restored, retaining its traditional chestnut beams, whitewashed walls and tiled floors. The ground floor has a living/dining room with large open fireplace, opening onto a country kitchen & small patio Andaluz. A Moorish-style double bedroom also opens onto the patio. Upstairs is a large, sunny Master bedroom with a spectacular beamed ceiling & far reaching views & well-equipped bath/shower room. More steps lead to a lovely roof terrace where you can eat in the shade, sunbathe, or enjoy fabulous views of the stunning gorge. **For larger parties we also own other similar cottages nearby. Please contact us for further details.

Amenities/facilities provided
The Roof terrace has both a sunny area for sunbathing and a shaded area for the hottest months. It is equipped with recliners, a table & chairs, barbeque & a large paddling pool and has wonderful views of the Rio Santo Gorge. A fantastic spot for bird lovers as the eagles can usually be seen at sunset, soaring over the gorge and calling to each other.
The dramatically situated coastal town of Salobreña, clinging to a rock with its castle perched on top, is a 35 minute drive away. The larger town of Almuñecar a few minutes further on has an interesting market on Friday mornings. Marina del Este has a few exclusive shops and a couple of nice waterfront restaurants overlooking the Marina. More secluded beaches can be found around La Herradura. A little further on still lies the more cosmopolitan coastal town of Nerja with its famous caves.

Stunning walks, literally from the doorstep. Great carp fishing in the Embalse de Beznar and Barbel fishing in the Rio Santo. The Lecrin Valley is adjacent to the Alpujarras, (made famous by Chris Stewart's book, 'Driving Over Lemons'). The spa town of Lanjarron is a short drive and higher Alpujarran villages such as Pampaneira,Capileira and Bubion are accessible within an hour. Cordoba with its old walled city centre and the Mesquita is also accessible as a full day trip - a journey of about 2 hrs along the Castle studded 'Route of the Caliphs'. Guadix with its troglydites and cave homes is also accessible, as is the Cabo de Gato - a naturalist's paradise with outstanding snorkelling and diving.
Further details
The lower barrio of Albuñuelas has a bar/restaurant of some character and the local bread van and fish hawkers visit each morning to sell their wares in the street just below the church. The upper barrio, a short walk away, has several shops, a bank, bars and restaurants and a weekly market on Thursday mornings. There are several nice swimming pool/restaurants nearby. Guided walks or horse trekking are available from local English residents which take in items of historical interest (Moorish, Roman, Iberian) as well as the flora and fauna of the valley. Ideal for relaxation and perfect for walkers, fishermen or twitchers. The epic GR7 walk from Algeciras to Istanbul passes the door and one of the GR7 markers can be seen upon the wall. There is also excellent carp fishing in the lake & barbel fishing in the river. The lush valley just beyond the house is rich with oranges, almonds, grapes, figs, pomegranates, persimmons, and prickly pears. The Moors called this place the Valley of Joy.
