Casa Terraza is a traditional white washed village house with beamed ceilings and terracotta tiled floors and central heating. There is a covered balcony with beautiful views over the village and to the sierras beyond and, on a clear day, to the Mediterranean in the far distance. Casa Terraza is situated in the village of Yegen in the Alpujarras in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The area is untouched by tourism and you see a way of life that has in some ways changed little. You will see the men leave the village with their mules in the morning to work on the land each day, carrying with them the tools they need for that day's work and often returning home in the evening with that season's produce freshly picked. The village has 2 grocery shops, visiting vans selling freshly caught fish and a bread shop. Buy your fresh bread for breakfast and squeeze the juicy local oranges for fresh juice - what more could you ask for!

The area is a walkers paradise, catering for the serious walker with the full range of the Sierra Nevada Natural park to explore, including Mulhacen 3418m and 15 summits above 3000m to climb in the Alpujarra. For gentler walking there are numerous tracks and a network of Camino Reales, centuries old pathways kept open by Royal decree. The long distance marked footpath, the GR7, passes through Yegen and a number of villages. The mountain tracks are ideal for mountain biking. The area is of interest to the casual and serious birdwatcher. You can go horse-riding and we can also contact an experienced guide to arrange guided walks. The Sierra Nevada has a large number of indigenous wild flowers and spring is a good time for this. We can also put you in touch with a local artist for painting courses or visit a local therapist for a theraputic massage or you could just laze in the sun and soak up the peace and tranquility.
A good day out is the Gabo de Gata, a natural park well know for birdwatching, where flamingos and avocets can be seen feeding in the salt pans. Visit the small town of Purellena famous for its pottery. There are many artisans to be found in the area.
There are places to eat in the village and within a 20 minute drive in either direction there are many restaurants serving inexpensive food. The area produces its own wine and you can go to visit bodegas. We can recommend one on the Sierra Contraviesa, Baranco Oscuro, which is becoming known internationally, having won prizes for its ecological wines which are produced from the tempranillo grape. Visit Lanjaron, a famous spa town with its curative waters and whose spring water is drunk all over Spain. The area is also known for its air-dried ham.
Whatever your interests, provided you enjoy nature and peaceful pursuits, a stay in the Alpujarras cannot fail to provide you with an enjoyable and enriching experience.
